No Room in the Inn

“No Room in the Inn”
A display of Christmas Nativity Scenes at the Federated Church
For the benefit of Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard

“There is no Room in the Inn” a display of Creches for the benefit of Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard will be part of Christmas in Edgartown this December. For the fifth, the Federated Church Meetinghouse will be filled with over fifty cheches. These are miniature nativity scenes, which celebrate the birth of Jesus. Children are welcome and will go home with stickers of the nativity scene and a backdrop to color.

Because Bethlehem was full of travelers who had come to take part in the Roman census, there was no room in the inns for Joseph and Mary and their newborn child. Creches represent the stable where the family had to stay.

Many Island residents face the same problem that Mary and Joseph faced in Bethlehem. The Creche display seeks to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard.
The Creches reflect the creativity of the artists who have made the individual scenes. They range in style from delicate creches made of fragile crystal and glass to the austere beauty of Haitian scenes crafted out of metal salvage from oil drums. There is a 60-year-old German creche fabricated out of cloth and glue which must be handled with care and others made out of wool and wood which a child can play with.

Habitat Director, Greg Orcutt, will be available to answer questions on both days. Elizabth Villarc, Church Historian, will also be available to answer questions about the Meetinghouse and the creches.

A Celebration of Habitat for Humanity of Martha's Vineyard

  • 45 South Summer Street Edgartown, MA, 02539 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

On December 12, the Rotary Club and the Federated Church, both of Martha’s Vineyard, are co-hosting a Celebration of Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard. Their reception will be part of the two day “No Room in the Inn", display of more than 75 creches. These nativity scenes will be exhibited inside the 1828 Meeting House during Christmas in Edgartown. There will also be a Silent Auction featuring a delightful variety of offerings including a two hour Edgartown Harbor sail, lots of island sweets, and special gems from the Habitat basement. The reception will offer an opportunity to meet Greg Orcutt, Habitat’s Director, as well as Church Historian, Elizabeth Villard.
Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard builds houses because they believe that everyone, everywhere should have a healthy, affordable place to call home. It is a partnership, not a giveaway program.
Homeowners must invest hundreds of hours of their own labor in their future homes. Each building is a combination of their efforts, the work of many volunteers and the gifts of those who donate to provide financial support. This mixture has allowed Habitat of MV to complete eighteen affordable homes for low-income families on the island. When a family helps build or improve a place they can call home, they are also building a better community, a better life for themselves.
Habitat of MV is currently beginning the permitting and planning for their nineteenth home which will be built in Oak Bluff. They are also planning with the towns of Oak Bluffs, Edgartown and West Tisbury to develop multiple properties in these areas.
At the same time, they are harvesting building materials, fixtures and/or appliances from at least 2 Island houses a week. These materials are used in Habitat Builds or resold at 30% of their fair market value to fund their work. Smaller items such as lamps, decorative items and art will be offered as part of the silent auction during the “No Room in the Inn” event. These efforts keep materials out of the landfill and help others on Island to build at a lower cost. They do all this with one employee, 11 members of the board of directors and many, many volunteers.
Over seventy creches or Nativity Scenes will be displayed in the Meeting House. They dramatize the tradition that Jesus was born in a stable because “there was no room in the Inn.” They range in style from traditional wood and fabrics to whimsical offering including a Teddy Bear creche. They event helping Habitat makes sure that no child has to be born or live in a stable on the Vineyard.

Holiday Storytime with Author Cathryn Newton

Join the festivities at The Harborside Inn after the parade for a holiday reading/signing of HOME SWEET ISLAND by children’s author Cathryn Newton. This promises to be a special Christmas in Edgartown Event presented by The Harborside Inn with Edgartown Books.

About the Book: When Linnea learns of an impending winter storm stranding a ship, she quickly devises a plan to bring the island together. Much to her surprise, her compassion evokes holiday magic! Inspired by a community of islanders from Menemsha who braved high-running tides and the winter elements to bring Christmas cheer to a vessel from Europe that was stranded over the holidays in the harbor, the story is a heartwarming tale of true islander spirit and kindness.
About the Author: Cathryn Newton has always found inspiration living by the sea and finding the beauty in nature and art. Living on Martha's Vineyard for many years, she was captivated by the stories from lighthouse keepers, ship captains, and salt of the earth islanders. Cathryn wanted to share the magic of the island through children's books. She now resides in Rhode Island and the Vineyard with her family.

Christmas at Sea at the Federated Church

  • Martha's Vineyard Federated Church (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Following the unique pattern of two previously successful programs, the 3rd Annual “Christmas at Sea” celebrates the music of the season, along with our island’s rich heritage of sea songs and stories. Hosted by Mark Alan Lovewell and Molly Conole, and featuring performances by the Federated Church Choir, led by Peter Boak, and other well-known island musicians and storytellers, the event draws inspiration from its historic setting--the 1828, whaling-era Federated Church in Edgartown. Rev. Mark Winters provides an opening and closing welcome prayer, and the audience is taken on an island journey, soaking in the season and island lore through listening and singing along. Free admission, and a dessert reception will follow. It is a lovely, fun, festive, and feel-good event for all!

"No Room in the Inn," a display of Creches to support Habitat for Humanity of MV

For the fourth year, The Federated Church Meetinghouse will be filled with over fifty creches in a display titled “There is no Room in the Inn” for the benefit of Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard.
The parents are sometimes joined by shepherds, magi or angels who came to see the newborn child.

They come from all over the world including ones from Haiti, Mexico, Germany, and France. There are three creches which are no longer being made: a Willow Tree, a Beyer’s and a M. A. Hadley blue and white porcelain one.

The Creche Display will be open from Noon to 4:00 PM on Saturday, December 9 and from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Sunday, December 10th. Habitat Director, Greg Orcutt, will be available to answer questions on both days.

11:30 Cubist, Renaissance and Teddy Bear Creches

Join Church Historian Elizabeth Villard for a walk around the more than 50 creches on display and learn something of their origins and history.

1:00 Scavenger Hunt.

Find the 10 objects hidden in the creches and win a creche ornament for your tree.

2:00 Join the Federated Church Carolers for half an hour of caroling.
